Coaching

I'm coaching the freshmen girls team @ Highland High this season. We started w/ a VERY inexperienced group, but have given them a solid base of fundamental basketball skills (& like our chances in the frosh state tourney in February) and they've developed into a highly competitive team!

This game against Logan was particularly exciting. We hit a buzzer beater to send it to overtime and then dominated the extra period!

Clark Planetarium

Sarah got a pretty sweet deal on an annual membership to Clark Planetarium online! It includes admission for all documentary films for the IMAX, as well as the Dome Theater. The biggest bonus for the kids was the complimentary popcorn! We look forward to frequenting this venue often, since it's just minutes away, @ the Gateway!

Stake Christmas Play

Sarah's Stake used to perform this Christmas play, growing up in NorCal. So, she decided to take it upon herself to share part of her childhood w/ her family & our Stake by putting it into production in SLC. After 3 months of weekend rehearsals, the performance was Fantastic! So proud of Sarah for directing it and Audrey & Kate for performing in it!

Surprise, It's Ryan Innes (Again)!

I hired Ryan Innes to play for Sarah's birthday! I hadn't anticipated seeing him in concert twice within the week before Sarah's big day, but having invited friends & family, who'd never heard him before, it was still A LOT of fun! I had told Sarah that Kirsten would be watching our kids, in an effort to keep it a secret. We arrived just when I'd planned, only to see Ryan walking out the front door (apparently he'd forgotten something in his car)! Again, we had a GREAT night, with our private concert, family, friends, and food afterwards. We appreciate Kirsten hosting the event and all who attended and kept it a secret (since I had it all planned out about 6 weeks in advance)! I don't know if this tops the cruise I took her on for her birthday last year, but it's certainly one she'll remember. Love you, Sarah!

YES! We've been to A LOT of concerts lately, especially where Ryan Innes is involved! Well, this time Ryan was involved in an online contest (of which Sarah contributed to!) to open for Andy Grammer. He won, and we decided to go, since it was practically in our neighborhood.

I had my first opportunity to take the girls to the Children's Theater for the play, The Masque of Beauty & The Beast. Audrey was mentioned, as having read the story, when they opened. Halloween 2011

So, we decided to head to Evanston (NOT Evingston, seriously Utahns!) & trick or treat w/ Mandy's family this year. Most of the businesses downtown close a little early and hand out candy, and judging from the attendance, the majority of the town is there! With small children, we were happy to go trick or treating during daylight hours, where we were able to see everyone else & their costumes! Isaac was a little confused, but completely happy to receive ALL the candy he could eat (& that's what he spent his time doing). We also attended Mandy's Ward's trunk or treat. My kids have SO much candy! We then had dinner back @ Mandy's w/ Grandma & Grandpa Kelly & Dane. Super FUN night! Thanks Mandy & Nate!

Spending Time in Southeastern Idaho!

I arrived home late Friday night, slept in my own bed, and then we left for Idaho on Saturday. Ryan Innes happened to be playing a show in Rexburg that night, so we coerced a good portion of the Stuart Clan to join us. Those Stuarts sure keep me entertained! After hearing his smooth grooves, they're now fans! This picture was taken @ Sammy's (if you're hungry & passing through Rexburg, we recommend it!).

The reason we went to Idaho was to support and celebrate w/ Jackson his 12th birthday and being ordained a Deacon. This was the MOST animated I caught him (in the 4 photos I took)! Happy birthday Jacks, we're proud of you!

Presenter Pride

SUECON 2011

I was proud to be a presenter @ the first annual SUECON (Southern Utah Educators Conference), in St. George. It's always a pleasure to represent the SLCSD. The paradox shift I encountered this year was knowing most of the presenters from around the state (my Ed Tech counterparts), but NOT knowing any teachers.

Jaime Casap, the Google Education Evangelist, was my favorite keynote speaker. I was actually invited to a dinner with him by the UCET board and UEN. Didn't sit @ his table or speak w/ him, but was there!

Coolest thing, other than presenting, was eating @ the Anasazi Steakhouse. They heat these stones to about 700 degrees Fahrenheit, and slap your meat order on it. You have to eat fast, so that it doesn't burn. It was delicious!

A BIG thanks to my Uncle Bob & Aunt Jody for giving me a place to stay! I appreciate your hospitality! Love you folks!

So, we've NOW been to 3 shows, in 3 months, to check out one of our favorite local Utah artists, Ryan Innes. This one was held in someone's backyard, in Sandy. There were about 40 people, so it was up close & personal. We talked to him after the show and he said, "Hey, are you guys are the Kellys?" (We both post a lot about him, as well as on his Facebook & Twitter pages!) I was flattered, Sarah thinks we're officially his stalkers.

Centerpoint Legacy Theater

I have a teacher friend who was performing in a production of Anything Goes, which Sarah happened to be in during her high school acting career. This was the first time I've been to Centerpoint (Sarah took the girls this summer). It's REALLY nice! I'll admit, I thoroughly enjoy attending the theater w/ my wife!

Kid History Event - Cottonwood High School

We're BIG fans of the Kid History guys, so much in fact, that we attended their most recent release party. They shared background interviews, showed all five of the previous episodes, released their new project (Kid Remix), premiered episode six, and as a bonus, Randy got engaged on stage! An Early Anniversary

With Audrey's birthday @ the end of the month (2 days before our anniversary) & as hectic as this Summer has been, we decided to celebrate our 10th anniversary early. This year we went rafting down the Colorado River w/ a tour company. We ended up in boat w/ a pair of moms who had their teenage sons, + a friend, & an RM for a guide (Joe)! It was a VERY peaceful relaxing day, & the boys entertained us (by flipping the high schools kids out of the duckies). I LOVE you Sarah & am VERY thankful to have you as my wife.

The kids spent 2 days w/ Grandma & Grandpa Kelly. We appreciate their willingness to watch our kids.

Side note: We made our overnight arrangements quite close to our trip & I booked a room in a hostile. Sarah had NEVER stayed in a hostile before (& may NEVER again). This place was SUPER ghetto & the room was SO hot! Neither of us slept very well. On the bright side, w/ the money we saved we had two VERY delicious meals on the trip.

The girls were supposed to be cleaning their bedroom. When they came up to dinner, we were introduced to their newest super hero collaboration: Undie Woman & Undie Girl. RSL vs San Jose

My boss was out of town and gave me her tickets to the July 23rd RSL game. I took Audrey with me, on a daddy-daughter date. The game was SUPER exciting in the second half, as RSL scored 4 goals in a span of 15 minutes (winning 4-0)! Afterwards we were allowed on the field to watch fireworks (since July 24, Pioneer Day, was the following day). My favorite part of the night was when Audrey was leaning on me, watching the fireworks, and gushed, "Dad, I'll NEVER forget this night!" :)

A Week Later...

I was back @ Sandy Ampitheater, this time w/ Sarah, to enjoy one of our favorite singers, Peter Breinholt. His "B-Sides" concert introduced us to several new favorite songs, as well as a new talent, Sarah Sample. Excellent event (both the venue & the music)!

Herman's Hermits Concert @ Sandy Ampitheater

When I saw that Peter Noone & the band were coming to UT this Summer I called up my dad, knowing he's a big fan, and asked if he'd ever seen them live, to which he replied he had NOT! So I bought the tickets & a month later we were able to enjoy a night out together, listening to hits from the 60s. These guys can still work a crowd, after 47 years! Thanks Dad, that was A LOT of FUN!

This was the 2nd time I've been a presenter this year (the other was UCET, in SLC) @ a state conference! This is our 3rd consecutive year attending the Rural Schools Conference in Cedar City & we've enjoyed spending time in the southern part of the state. My presentations went well, I attended some interesting workshops, the kids loved the hotel pool, we made it to the Green Show, spent an afternoon/evening hiking around Bryce Canyon, & I met one of tech/keynote idols (Kevin Honeycutt)! All in a week's work (I LOVE my job)!

We made our second trip to SpringMobile Ballpark this Summer, to a beautiful evening. We had general admission seats, or the outfield lawns. We'd never done that before and discovered the train, the playground, & loads of families w/ friendly kids. We had SO much fun & stayed later than we ever have! I think the Bees pulled out a "W".

We woke up early (hey, it's Summer, so 8 AM is early!), on the 4th and went to visit Rod (Grandpa Round) @ the SLC Airport (this was a layover on his way home, after visiting Lincoln in Spokane). We enjoyed our chocolate milk, cinnamon roles, & conversation!

We went to Kirsten & Weston's later in the day to celebrate w/ the Kelly Clan (which included Grandpa Kelly, Mandy & Nate & Co., Steve, & the aforementioned hosts). So the kids saw BOTH of their grandpas, but neither of their grandmas this 4th. We love the freedoms we are able to enjoy in this country & are thankful we were able to celebrate w/ family!

I know how innocent Isaac looks in this video, and how HARD the other kids are throwing the giant chess pieces. But to be honest, Isaac was dropping the pieces, yelling "UH OH!" when the other boys walked in. So yeah, I'm blaming him for planting the seed. Still, the boy makes his dad laugh.

And Condolences

We've continued, as patrons, to the public library's summer programs. Here we attended the main library and watched a magic show. The Arts Festival was going on, which made it VERY difficult to actually get in the building, but the kids were still able to see several tricks!

Then Isaac decided to take out this life-sized lion on roller skates. The kid is seriously destructive, but for some reason, we still love the guy. Thanks public library (& Sarah for planning all of these fun summer outings)!

Annual Evanston Event

Mandy & Nate informed us that we could pick up FREE fishing rods for the kids by taking them to the Evanston Ice Ponds for Kids Fishing Day! Since we were already in town for Emma's birthday, we figured we'd give it a try. The place was packed, but the kids had fun on their first fishing adventure (even if we didn't catch a thing)!

A member of our Ward (thanks Deboni!) has planned a hike, for kids, every week of the summer, & Immigration Canyon was first on the list! Having recently watched, The Sound of Music, for the first time as a family, Sarah & the kids were reminded of the beauty of the mountains. I doubt our kids were making any beautiful music, like the Von Trapp children, but they were out & about enjoying the scenic vistas & crisp mountain air!

An Evening in Sugarhouse

Sarah's been making a concerted effort to get the kids to library events around SLC. Tonight's adventure took us to Sugarhouse & the Sprague Library (which we'd never been to) for making kites. Afterwards we picked up some ice cream (from Red Mango) & enjoyed watching the sun set from the park. I feel blessed to be able to spend so much time with my wife & kids and just enjoy life!

(Provo) Rooftop Concert Series

We recently discovered a new favorite (local) recording artist, whose music we LOVE - Mindy Gledhill! (Sarah actually met her a few years ago, when she gave a fireside in our Stake!) We were very excited to see her perform live, and even more happy that it was FREE! And while she exceeded our expectations and increased our admiration for her music, we were also introduced to another new artist we liked, Ryan Innes. It was a GREAT night! Memorial Day @ the Zoo

Mark & Andrae invited us to join them @ the Hogle Zoo. We enjoyed checking out the new Zoorasic dinosaur displays (although we saw the best one first - T-Rex). Due to the holiday, the zoo was CRAZY busy, but we still had a lot of fun hanging w/ the cousins & Grandma Kelly!

Blustery Bees Game

Took the kids to their first ball game of Spring (if you can call it that!). Due to the inclement weather, we had our choice of nearly any seat in the stadium. The kids even met Bumble (Isaac took some time to warm up, while the girls adored him)! All in all it was a VERY enjoyable evening, in spite of the rain.

Mike accompanied me to Rio Mesa this go around, but before heading to the U's remote research site, we spent the afternoon hiking around Arches National Park. Incredible sandstone land forms that I look forward to sharing w/ my family (sometime in the near future)!

The interesting (or stressful, depending on who you are) part of the adventure was after arriving @ Rio Mesa, my truck wouldn't start. We spent a 90 degree Saturday outdoors, finding randomly selected waypoints, & counting onions for the U's archeology professors. Those aforementioned professors were able to rig my truck's throttle the next morning, & we were able to return to SLC. Definitely one of those CRAZY memorable experiences!

Went to King's English (bookstore) w/ the sole purpose of meeting James Dashner, author of the Maze Runner series! With several authors in attendance, but few fans, we had the privilege of a one-on-one chat w/ Mr. Dashner - SWEET! Meeting Marc Brown

Marc Brown, a.k.a. the author of the Arthur children's book series, was in town, so we went to meet him @ the Anderson-Hillside Library. Unfortunately, I went to the wrong library, so we missed his presentation, but were still able to get his autograph & take this picture. He was very amicable!

My mom & I attended Mistie D (Nielsen) Myers' funeral (obituary link: http://obitsutah.com/obituary/5878/mistie-d-myers.htm). What an AMAZING family! While sad, their tributes to their sister/daughter/wife have strengthened my own testimony & makes me WANT to strive to be a better person.

Rod & Sheryl rented the Moses Cabin for an extended weekend & got the entire family together for some "together time".

Time w/ Dad

Sarah presented @ & Audrey attended a Stake-sponsored activity. To make the little ones feel appreciated, I took them to the Gateway to Barnes & Noble and the Apple store. My kids LOVE books, & we had the chance to read a few that were new to us (notice the book in Kate's hand). We then went to the Apple store to play with the iPad 2. Isaac impressed people who passed, as well as Apple employees, with his iPad skills. Remember, this kid is an iPad/iPod Touch addict! Highlight of the day, for the kids, the escalators!
